THE FORGOTTEN VOCATION by Gerry
Clyne, OFM
How often have you heard people say “We need more priests and
sisters.” We certainly do, but what about Brothers? I call the
vocation to be a brother “The forgotten vocation.”
As a brother I am
often asked three questions: 1. “Why don’t you become a priest?” 2.
“What is a brother?” and 3. “Why did you become a brother?” These
questions form the basis for this article on the vocation to the
brotherhood.

The first question people often ask me is: “Why don’t you become a
priest?” or worse yet, “Why don’t you go all the way and become a
priest?” If a man asks me this I ask him the same question. I
usually have to answer for him. “You didn’t become a priest because
God called you to another vocation – to be a husband and a father.
Well, in the same way, God did not call me to be a priest. He called
me to a different vocation; to be a brother.”
Brotherhood is a
distinct calling from God, separate from priesthood. Linking
brotherhood to priesthood is comparable to saying that a person must
become a carpenter first before he can become a stonemason. No, they
are separate, distinct trades. One does not lead into the other. In
the same way, the brotherhood is not a stage towards priesthood.
