Happy Feast of Saint Francis!

The logo of the Canadian Franciscan Province, seen on the banner of this newsletter, is a stylized form of the crucifix of San Damiano. It was this crucifix that spoke to Francis of Assisi at the very beginning of his conversion. During a period of his life when he has spent all his energies trying to become a knight – obsessed with a grandiose quest for glory – he one day enters a small, ruined chapel. On the walls, he sees this crucifix. He begins to pray, and the crucifix speaks to his heart: “Go Francis and repair my house which is falling into ruin”.
Believing at first that the Lord is calling him to rebuild the frame of the abandoned chapel, Francis finds an apron, a wheelbarrow, and a trowel, and sets to work restoring the dilapidated walls of the chapel. As the years went by, he realized that it was the entire body of the living Church that needed to be rebuilt. It was in this context that the Order of Friars Minor was born in the 13th century, as a simple return to the source that is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Eight hundred years later, the call of the San Damiano crucifix remains a burning issue. So many burdens and challenges mark the life of the Church and of the world. Fortunately, the Gospel has lost none of its freshness and relevance!
Our recent Provincial Chapter, held in the Spring, highlighted the resolve of the members of the Holy Spirit Province of Canada to move forward, humbly but persistently, as Friars committed to the repair of the house, in the spirit of our founder Saint Francis. In this newsletter, you will see how the Friars Minor here still carry the dream of rebuilding the Church and the world from a simple return to the Gospel. Obviously, faithful to the Franciscan tradition, they are committed to this reconstruction in a spirit of fraternity, of unconditional welcome of the poorest and of simplicity of heart.
Happy reading!
