On August 8, nearly 400 people gathered for a family celebration in honour of the 800th anniversary of St Francis’s death. This jubilee year was proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV for the universal Church, and it was in this context that the team at the Mount St. Francis Retreat Centre decided to organize a series of events in honour of the founder of the Franciscans.

Under the leadership of Leah Perreault, the Executive Director of Mount St. Francis, around fifty volunteers set to work for several days before the event to lay the groundwork. The retreat centre’s kitchen team prepared the food for all the guests, and everything was served in under 20 minutes. The day began with an open-air Mass which I had been asked to preside over. After the meal, a series of activities were organized, covering both spiritual and family-oriented themes. People could go to pray in the chapel and go to confession at the retreat centre, whilst at the same time visiting stalls and watching performances. The whole event took place in a friendly, warm and joyful atmosphere.
Thank you to everyone who came to the Family Festival to celebrate the jubilee of St Francis on August 8, 2026. We celebrated Mass, served a meal to over 350 people, enjoyed glorious weather and an afternoon concert. The stallholders brought a lively little market to life, and we sold out of all our ice cream. Concerts by Liz Christensen, Brettyn Rose and myself helped to make for a wonderful afternoon.

We extend our warmest thanks to our volunteers, partners and supporters from St. Mary’s Parish and the Knights of Columbus (Cochrane), St. Francis’ Parish (Calgary), Bike Cochrane, COLT Buses, Rocky View Schools, McKay’s Ice Cream, Unique Soapstone Carving, Cultivate Cochrane, the Calgary Food Bank and the garden volunteers, as well as the Diocese of Calgary, not forgetting all our exhibitors, including Art of the Icon, Living Loreto, Bernadette Henwood, Blissfully Tallow, The Lion and the Lamb, and Found Books.
It was a first, but according to everyone present, certainly not the last. What a wonderful way to highlight the importance of Saint Francis for the Church and the world today.
