Franciscan Friar Stephen Ronald Gattafoni, O.F.M., son of Giuseppe and Carmen (Micielli) Gattafoni died on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, October 4, 2023; one day shy of his 90th birthday.
Friar Stephen was always proud of his Italian heritage, which meant he was a perpetual storyteller of truths and legends; always commanding an audience. He was a conversationalist to the fullest. He had a curious mind which allowed for him to engage with people from all walks of life and all ages. He delighted in playfulness and wisdom of infants and children. He was inquisitive with leaders and educators. He dialogued with teens and young adults seeing a hope in them. He enjoyed meeting families and couples and hearing about their life. He was generous with his compliments of beauty, stature and work done. He was also generous with his bright smile, his chuckles and booming voice (which would often break into song).
Friar Stephen had an interest in science and faith. He enjoyed watching documentaries, football, classic movies and a good romance! He was an avid reader on a variety of topics. He delved into many languages having a keen interest in the meaning of words. He was also a man of prayer. He prayed for many people. He was an intercessor for the variety of world situations and was always aware of prayers needed for specific projects, events and church events.
Friar Stephen received the Franciscan Friar habit on August 12, 1956 and made his first vows on August 18, 1957. He was ordained a priest on July 8, 1961. Through the joys and struggles of being a friar and priest he ministered in a variety of roles. He enjoyed his years ministering at Paroisee St. Jean Baptiste in Regina. He also was pastor in Vancouver. He served as pastor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish and Chaplain at St. Francis of Assisi High School, both in Calgary. He loved being at the high school. Go Browns! He also served in various roles within the Franciscan Province, including Director of Mount St. Francis Retreat Centre from 2004-2007, calling The Mount his home until his death.
