Born in St-Étienne-des-Grès on September 17, 1926, he was the son of Louis Boisvert and Lorenza Lampron. Brother Laurent completed his classical studies at the Saint-Antoine Seminary in Trois-Rivières. He studied philosophy at the Franciscan scholasticate in Quebec City (1948-1951) and theology at the Franciscan Seminary in Montreal (1951-1955). He also earned numerous degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts, a Licentiate in Theology from Saint Paul University in Ottawa in 1958, and a Doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical Antonian University in Rome in 1960.
He entered the Franciscan novitiate in Sherbrooke on August 10, 1947, professed his temporary vows in 1948 in Sherbrooke, and his solemn vows in 1951 at the Franciscan convent on Rosemont Boulevard in Montreal. Brother Laurent was ordained a priest in St-Étienne-des-Grès in 1955.
After completing his studies in Rome, Brother Laurent returned to the Resurrection Convent in Montreal, where he held several positions, including professor of dogmatic and fundamental theology, librarian, Assistant Master of Clerics, Master of Clerics, Discreet of the convent, and Provincial Definitor, among others. He was appointed Assistant Director of the journal La Vie des Communautés religieuses from 1963 to 1967 and served as its Director from 1967 to 1995. Brother Laurent was also Secretary of the Canadian Franciscan Marian Commission and a member of several committees, including those for animation and coordination of the Province, organization of the Provincial Chapter, and revision of the Province’s Particular Statutes, among others. Teaching also played a significant role in his life; he taught at the Pie XI Institute, the University of Montreal, as a lecturer at the Externat Classique in Longueuil, and at the intercommunity novitiate in Montreal, Quebec City, and Ottawa.
He also served as a resource person, theological advisor, or facilitator for more than 60 General and Provincial Chapters of various religious institutes. A prolific author, he wrote around ten books and over 75 articles.
He passed away in Montreal on January 7, 2025, at the age of 98, after 77 years of religious life and 69 years as a priest.
