It is not every year a Jubilee is declared, even more rare is a Jubilee declared for a saint. As we mark this Jubilee Year of St. Francis of Assisi, we celebrate the life of a man who has inspired thousands of others still to this day.

During our annual retreat held this summer the Friars celebrated the Renewal of Vows for three of our Brothers: Brandon, Vincent and Francis. I could not help but consider how this truly is a celebration in today’s world when commitment is overwhelmed by “instant everything”. These three Brothers of ours willingly stepped before our Provincial Minister and declared to live for another year by the Rule of Life of St. Francis. This is indeed a cause for celebration!
In this Jubilee Year, their renewal is a reminder for all Friars and all people to consider our commitments, our choices, and the way we live the gospel. This is not always easy, but when woven into our living, is cause for moments of celebration to encourage us.
As each Friar who renewed his vows was embraced by the Friars present, it was overflowing with joy and hope. Jubilee Years and celebrations, such as a Renewal of Vows, are great reminders of both joy and hope. Through such moments we are made aware of the joy and hope which is uplifting our heart, our conviction of living is encouraged, and we again encounter Christ in the world around us and in the person in front of us.
As Friars we have much to celebrate in the Renewal of Vows of Brothers Brandon, Vincent, and Francis, and in the Solemn Profession of our Brother Aldin. We rejoice and give thanks to God. What moments in this past year are filling you with joy and hope? What moments are you celebrating? Take the time to honour these moments during this Jubilee Year of St. Francis.
